Seminar 4 "The establishment and functioning of the extermination camps"
In the extermination camps, the executors did not open the wagons themself, because they were frequently attacked by those brought to die. That task was assigned to prisoners forced to work. That solution also had a hidden intent to mislead the victims about the true purpose of the camp to the very end. Therefore, the gas chambers were not visible from the railway track, and the SS forces said that the Jews would now go to the baths. Those who were not able to walk anymore were shot by Germans on the spot.
